The Dog Year Day: A New Tradition

Because dogs age differently than humans, there's one day in a dog's lifetime that they are the same exact age as a human. This is reason to celebrate. Buy an extra bone. Take a super long walk. Eat cake. This is a day that only comes around once, so... celebrate! We started this in my family when we realized that our 9-month-old Border Terrier and my six-year-old son were getting close to same age. So, I sketched out a way to calculate an exact day recalling a math lesson from seventh grade. Thanks Ms. Brooks!

What if I already missed my Dog Year Day ?

It's never too late to celebrate your furry pal! Since this is a new tradition, you're canine companion is likely to forgive you for missing it. Besides, they'll be too preoccupied with that juicy bone you just gave them seemingly out of the blue to worry about a decade or two delay in dog years.

A note about how the calculator works:

There are a lot of different ways of considering a dog's age in terms of human years. The breed and size of the dog all have factors. For a general calculation, the current consensus from vets is that a dog ages approximately 7.3 human years in a calendar year.
