That's when you'll both be 42 years old!
Dog Year Day is the special day when you and your dog are the same age. Because dogs age differently than humans, there's only one day in your lives when your ages perfectly align.
This calculation uses modern research on dog aging, which shows that dogs don't simply age at 7 human years per 1 dog year. The aging process is more complex and varies by breed and size. We provide a simple, less accurate, but more fun calculator. With this model, for our younger fans, the Golden Dog Years tended to be within the first year. But ultimately, its your choice. The Dog Year Day is meant to be a fun way to celebrate your bond with your furry friend no matter how you come to your date.
Our Dog Year Day calculator uses an advanced three-phase aging model based on recent veterinary research. The traditional "7 human years to 1 dog year" rule is now known to be an oversimplification that doesn't accurately reflect canine aging patterns.
Research published in Cell Systems by researchers at the University of California San Diego School of Medicine found that dogs experience rapid aging during their early years, followed by a more gradual aging process later in life. Additionally, breed size significantly impacts aging rates, with larger breeds generally aging more rapidly than smaller ones.
Smaller breeds (under 20 lbs) age more slowly after maturity, gaining roughly 4 human years per calendar year. Meanwhile, giant breeds (over 90 lbs) may age as rapidly as 8-9 human years per calendar year after reaching maturity, which explains their shorter average lifespans.
By selecting your dog's specific breed or size category, our calculator provides a more accurate prediction of your unique Dog Year Day—the one special day when you and your canine companion share the same age.
